The Yankees got a problem
The early predictions for the 2026 season are showing the Dodgers beating the Yankees in the World Series. Early predictions usually indicate if teams are going to be good; however they are not always exact. It is true the 2026 Yankees have talent, but is it the right talent to win a World Series. Their lineup will likely be: Trent Grisham CF, Aaron Judge RF, Cody Bellinger LF, Ben Rice 1B, Giancarlo Stanton DH, Jazz Chisholm Jr 2B, Ryan McMahon 3B, Jose Caballero SS (or Volpe), Austin Wells C.
The problem the Yankees have is their best two prospects are outfielders Jasson Dominguez and Spencer Jones. Dominguez has had roughly one year of major league experience and is 22 years old. He provides absolute power from the left side of the plate and has improved greatly from the right side since being signed as a 16 year old venom. In an injury shortened 2025 season he managed to hit .257 with ten home runs. If healthy Dominguez might be the best young prospect outfielder in baseball. Spencer Jones is an absolute mammoth human being who is just realizing his power. At 6'7 and 240lbs he strikes fear into pitchers. At 24 years of age, this guy needs to play in the majors. He has put on 25 pounds of muscle since his days at Vandy and will be a star somewhere. So the question has to be asked, with the Yankees need for healthy pitching, both starters and especially bullpen, can they keep these two great prospects. I think they need to trade at least one.
The Yankees have never been a team that trades for the long term future. Basically, every year they play to win that year, and they spend accordingly. If they decided to trade for the future the White Sox would be a perfect partner. A team with seven minor league prospect pitchers in the top 100, the White Sox could put together an attractive package including Hagan Smith or Noah Schultz. That package would also include a Sox catcher, I'm guessing Edward Quero a young future to back up Wells. The Sox need an outfielder with pop more than anybody. That being said, I don't see the Yankees looking to bolster the future.
The best trade partner with the Yankees might really be the Padres. The Padres are trying to keep up with the Dodgers in their own division, and a young superstar might be exactly what they need. The Padres also have an abundance of pitching that could help the Yankees now. A package of Michael King, Adrian Morejon and Bradley Rodriguez could temp the Yankees to jump. King is a front line starter who would allow Weathers to go to the bullpen when Garret Cole returns from injury. Morejon and Rodriguez, along with Weathers going to the bullpen, would allow the Yankees to compete in the long playoff series.
In typical Yankees fashion, they have a problem that a lot of teams would like to have. Too much talent in one area. If they address this problem correctly, they may be a World Series contender.
