Japan's Dominance in the World Baseball Classic to be Challenged.
Japan has dominated the World Baseball Classic over the five tournaments held, and will be a force again this year. Major League Baseball is played by the greatest players in the world and rosters are filled with players from everywhere. Professional leagues in all the Caribbean Countries, Asia, Europe, Australia, Mexico, and Canada have developed talent at the highest level. Japan has won three of the five championships, including the last one in 2023 when Ohtani struck out Trout to highlight a great tournament. Small representatives have made surprising runs like Puerto Rico finishing second in 2017 and 2013, and the Dominican Republic claiming the Championship in 2013. Even South Korea and Cuba have second place finishes to Japan in 2006 and 2009. The mighty United States has only claimed one championship in 2017, despite fielding the most major league players every year. I'm predicting the United States to take the crown this year, however they will be challenged along the way.
The tournament is made up of four brackets consisting of five teams. Each bracket can only advance two teams after the pool play. The eight teams that survive their brackets then move to two four team brackets. Eventually leading to the finals.
The Miami Pool is considered the toughest. The Dominican Republic is most likely the favorite. With Guerrero Jr., Ketel Marte, Machado, Soto, Tatis Jr., Oneil Cruz, and Julio Rodriguez, this team can hit with anybody. Alcantara, Bello, Severino, and Peralta also gives them the four man rotation to hold teams down. The D.R. will be challenged by Venezuela's stacked line up. Acuna Jr., Churio, Abreu, Arraez, Suarez might not have the D.R. power at the plate but they will have the highest hit totals. P. Lopez, R. Suarez, and E. Rodriguez also gives them pitching strength. The Netherlands is a third team in that pool that has had success in past tournament. With Profar, Albies, Bogaerts, and Rafaelo the Netherlands can upset either of the other two powerhouses, however they lack pitching to win it all. Israel and Nicaragua are probably non players in this pool. I'm picking The Dominican Republic and Venezuela to advance.
The Tokyo Pool seems obvious. Japan is loaded again and with Ohtani, Yamamota, Kikuchi, and Itoh on the mound they are tough to beat. South Korea and Chinese Taipei will battle for second place and the last qualifier spot here. I can't even pretend to know players from these teams as most of them play professionally in their own countries. Czechia's players work full time jobs and play baseball as a hobby. I'm hoping they win a game but not likely. Australia is the fifth team but not probably up to this challenge. I'm going Japan and South Korea here.
The Puerto Rico Pool will also be a dog fight. Puerto Rico has been great in this tournament almost every year. With Arenado, Arroyo, Castro, Helio Ramos, and E. Rosario in the field they will be the best defensive team here. Add Lugo, J. Deleon, and E. Rivera to the rotation and they will keep teams from scoring. Canada will be much better this year than in the past. The Naylor brothers, Oneil in the outfield along side Caissie and Clark, and a pitching staff of Taillon, Quantrill and Paxton makes Team Canada a contender. The sleeper in this pool is Cuba. In the past they have been very good in the WBC. This is another team I know very little about. Baseball is the one thing Cuba has left, so it means a lot. Panama and Columbia are probably on the outside in this tough pool. I like Canada and Puerto Rico to advance.
The Houston Pool favorite is likely the USA. Loaded with Witt Jr., Harper, Carroll, Bregman, Judge, and Schwarber and pitchers like Skenes, Skubal, and Webb, the USA is a strong contender for the over all title. Team Mexico has given the USA fits in the past, and they also have a roster of major league talent. Durran, Cook, A. Thomas, Kirk, and Arozerana will give them experienced players. Their pitching is a bit weaker but Assad, Urquidy, and T. Walker are three major leaguers that won't fear anybody. Italy might be the sleeper in this pool. With power bats like Caglianone and Pasquatino and Teel this team will put point on the board quickly. Italy can also throw Lorenzen and Nola in big pool games to compete. Brazil and Great Britain are likely a little short talentwise for this pool. I see the USA winning this pool and I'm picking Italy to upset Mexico.
I love rooting for any sport's team wearing the USA on their jersey. But it means so much more for me with baseball. I'm picking the USA to win the whole tournament. I think it will come down to the Dominican Republic and the USA and anybody can win. Japan is great and might have a final say in all of this, but I'm picking offense over pitching. Get your American flags flying outside your house and enjoy this tournament. It is the Olympics for Baseball.
